When you meet someone for the first time, there are obvious things to ask:
What's your name?
What do you do?
Which could all be followed by an irredeemably awkward moment. After all, there's not much you can elaborate on after you've answered these perfunctorily. So now, the seconds are ticking, the empty silence is unbearable, there is a bead of cold sweat on your brow. Most people will try to wiggle their way out of this by saying something like:
Nice weather, ‘no?
Buti hindi ma-traffic, ‘no?
But they come face to face with more polite nodding and bland smiling, after which is another lull. What now?
